Abstract

This article focuses on a systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by researchers at Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan, examining glutathione (GSH)-related metabolites and enzyme activities in patients with depression. The study analyzed 30 eligible studies involving 1,019 patients and 947 healthy controls, finding significantly decreased activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in depressed patients, while levels of GSH and glutathione reductase (GR) showed no significant differences. Due to limited data, meta-analyses were not performed for other GSH-related enzymes, including glutathione disulfide (GSSG), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL), and glutathione synthetase (GS). The findings suggest that abnormalities in the GSH cycle, particularly reduced GPx activity, may contribute to depression’s pathophysiology and could serve as potential biomarkers, highlighting the need for further research on the GSH system in depression.
