Abstract

This study evaluated the impact of an integrated health system specialty pharmacy (HSSP) on viral load (VL) suppression in patients with HIV compared to those using non-health system specialty pharmacies (non-HSSPs). In a retrospective cohort of 889 patients at an academic medical center, those filling antiretroviral (ARV) medications through the HSSP demonstrated a significantly higher rate of VL suppression (91.0%) than those using non-HSSPs (86.0%), with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.89. Factors such as sex, race, and ethnicity were not associated with VL suppression, while increased age and lower Charlson Comorbidity Index scores correlated with better suppression. The findings suggest that the integrated HSSP model, which offers coordinated care and enhanced patient support, may improve clinical outcomes for HIV patients, though further research is needed to assess broader applicability and financial impacts.
