Abstract

This article focuses on research conducted at the University of Pretoria exploring occupational therapy students' experiences using the Kawa model as a self-reflection tool during their mental health work-integrated learning. The study employed a qualitative design involving semi-structured interviews with newly graduated community service occupational therapists, identifying facilitators, barriers, and recommendations related to the model’s use. Findings suggest that the Kawa model aids professional development by providing a structured approach to self-reflection, enhancing students’ self-awareness. The research recommends integrating the Kawa model into undergraduate training and suggests its potential applicability in other work-integrated learning contexts across South Africa.
