Abstract
This article examines the integration of Occupational Therapy (OT) into Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) to enhance mental health support for children and young people with special educational needs (SEN). It highlights an innovative OT model implemented in Newham that adopts a whole-school, tiered approach to empower school staff and parents, improve identification of additional needs, and adapt interventions beyond traditional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The inclusion of OT within MHSTs has reportedly increased staff confidence, fostered more inclusive school cultures, reduced exclusions, and minimized referrals to external agencies by providing tailored, holistic support. This approach aims to address health inequalities and improve accessibility and effectiveness of mental health services for children with additional needs.
