Abstract
The article examines longitudinal relationships among recreational therapy (RT) services, community integration, and quality of life for individuals with moderate to severe acquired brain injury (ABI). In a sample of 71 inpatient rehabilitation patients, findings indicate that individuals with poorer community integration received more RT services, and that both a higher number of RT services and better community integration significantly predicted improved environmental quality of life six months post-discharge. Neuropsychological impairments were not significant predictors of community integration or quality of life outcomes. The study supports the inclusion of RT as a standard rehabilitation discipline to promote long-term community reintegration and quality of life for individuals with significant ABI, while noting limitations related to sample size and recommending further research on specific RT interventions.
