Abstract

A recent gamma ray burst (GRB) from a distant explosion 1.9 billion light-years away had a significant impact on Earth's atmosphere, according to researchers. The burst, known as GRB 221009A, was the brightest ever recorded and ionized atoms in the ionosphere, potentially posing a risk to Earth's protective ozone layer. The event was observed by various instruments, including the SuperSID antenna at Ireland's Dunsink Observatory and the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite. While the likelihood of a closer GRB is rare, scientists warn that it could have serious consequences, including the destruction of the ozone layer and increased DNA damage from ultraviolet radiation.
