Tritium concentration in monthly precipitation in Okinawa and Kagoshima, southern Japan.

Abstract

This study focused on measuring background tritium concentrations in monthly precipitation collected in southern Japan, specifically Okinawa and Kagoshima, during 2022 and earlier. Tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, showed lower concentrations in southern Japan (mean values of 0.15 ± 0.06 Bq/L in Okinawa and 0.30 ± 0.13 Bq/L in Kagoshima) compared to northern regions, confirming a latitude effect where tritium levels increase with latitude. The research also analyzed stable isotopes and major ion species in precipitation, finding that sea-salt components influenced Okinawa samples more strongly than those from Kagoshima. These findings contribute to understanding regional variations in tritium deposition and precipitation chemistry in Japan.
