Perceptual Acuity Ability Applied for Endurance Runners: The Validity of a Just Noticeable Difference Approach.

Abstract

This article focuses on validating the use of the just noticeable difference (JND) approach, a classical psychophysics method, to measure perceptual acuity ability in competitive well-trained male endurance runners. Fifteen male runners completed treadmill trials at intensities of 70% and 80% of their maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), during which they identified minimal changes in exertion levels corresponding to small variations in treadmill speed and VO2. Statistical analyses demonstrated high reliability, agreement, and reproducibility of the JND method in detecting these perceptual thresholds. The study suggests that understanding individual JNDs can help athletes and coaches improve pace self-regulation and optimize endurance performance, though it notes limitations including the exclusive focus on male runners and two exercise intensities. Future research is recommended to expand this approach to diverse populations, higher intensities, and integrate additional psychophysiological and cognitive factors.
