Abstract

The water on the opposite side of the Earth, farthest from the moon, also experiences a high tide due to the centrifugal force resulting from the Earth-moon system's rotation. During the new moon and full moon phases, the Earth, moon, and sun align to combine their gravitational forces, resulting in higher high tides (spring tides). When the sun and moon are at right angles to each other (quarter phases of the moon), their gravitational forces partially cancel out, leading to lower high tides (neap tides).
