Abstract
This article provides a comprehensive overview of current research on ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), focusing primarily on observations made by the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) in Argentina, the largest cosmic ray detector to date. It details how extensive air showers produced by cosmic rays interacting with the atmosphere are detected using water-Cherenkov detectors and fluorescence telescopes, enabling measurements of the energy spectrum, arrival directions, and mass composition of UHECRs. Key findings include the identification of anisotropies in arrival directions suggesting extragalactic origins, evidence favoring starburst galaxies and Centaurus A as potential sources, and a mass composition that becomes heavier at the highest energies, challenging earlier proton-dominated models. The article also discusses complementary results from the Telescope Array experiment, ongoing upgrades to improve mass discrimination (AugerPrime), and future prospects for advancing understanding of UHECR origins and propagation.
