Abstract

This article examines the impact of ransomware attacks on healthcare through the lens of the CIA triad—confidentiality, integrity, and availability—highlighting three recent incidents. In September 2020, a ransomware attack on Düsseldorf University Hospital in Germany disrupted emergency services, contributing to a patient’s death due to delayed treatment, illustrating the critical importance of system availability. Later that year, Finnish mental health provider Vastaamo suffered a breach compromising patient confidentiality, with sensitive therapy records leaked and ransom demands made directly to patients, leading to significant psychological distress and the company’s closure. In August 2022, a ransomware attack on Advanced, the UK NHS 111 service provider, caused widespread system outages affecting millions of patients, primarily impacting availability, though the full extent of confidentiality breaches remains unclear. The article notes that such attacks are typically perpetrated by organized criminal groups exploiting healthcare’s vital role and the high stakes involved in maintaining access to patient data and services.
