Abstract
This article systematically reviews Indian literature from the past decade on decolonising psychology, focusing on how decolonisation is conceptualised and applied in psychological praxis within India. Analyzing 14 selected studies, the review identifies three main themes: the concepts of colonialism, coloniality (the ongoing legacy of colonial power structures), and decolonisation; the complicity of psychology in perpetuating colonial epistemic violence and social inequities; and strategies for decolonial praxis including epistemic justice, reflexive research methodologies, and culturally grounded mental health practices. The findings emphasize the need for psychologists in India to critically engage with colonial legacies embedded in psychological theories and methods, prioritize indigenous knowledge systems, and address broader socio-political contexts to support marginalized communities effectively. The study highlights gaps in Global South scholarship on decolonising therapy and calls for further research on decolonial mental health practices tailored to postcolonial societies.
