Abstract

The article focuses on advancements in transparency and traceability technologies within the coffee supply chain, highlighting their role in enhancing sustainability, credibility, and consumer trust. It discusses the adoption of blockchain technology by companies such as Olam Food Ingredients and Melitta Europa GmbH, as well as platforms like TraceX, to enable end-to-end tracking from farm to cup, often through QR codes linked to detailed origin data. The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is identified as a significant regulatory driver requiring plot-level traceability to prevent deforestation linked to coffee imports. Challenges include the complexity of supply chains, limited digital record-keeping among small farmers, and the need for stakeholder adoption of new digital systems. Despite these hurdles, integration with technologies like artificial intelligence and satellite mapping is advancing the potential for near-complete supply chain transparency.
