Abstract
The article reviews *Cosmopolitanism and Women's Fashion in Ghana: History, Artistry and Nationalist Inspirations* (2022) by Christopher L. Richards, which examines the evolution of Ghanaian women's fashion from independence in 1957 to the present. Richards focuses on female designers such as Laura Quartey, Letitia Obeng, Juliana Kweifio-Okai, Beatrice Arthur, and Aisha Ayensu, highlighting their role in blending Ghanaian cultural heritage with global fashion influences to create innovative, cosmopolitan styles. The book situates Ghanaian fashion within broader postcolonial and nationalist contexts, addressing issues of gender imbalance in the industry and challenging Eurocentric fashion narratives by emphasizing local creativity and tradition as dynamic rather than static. Richards categorizes Ghanaian fashion into four types—World, European, International, and Local—while exploring the complex interplay between tradition, modernity, and identity in Ghana's sartorial landscape.
