Abstract

Compulsory voting was introduced in Australia for federal elections in 1924, following low voter turnout in the 1922 election. Since then, participation in federal elections has been consistently high, with around 90% or more of eligible voters participating. Australia is one of 21 countries out of 195 worldwide to have compulsory voting. In comparison, countries like the UK and the USA, where voting is voluntary, have lower voter turnout. The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is responsible for overseeing the electoral system and ensuring that all eligible voters have the opportunity to cast their votes, including those in remote communities.
