Abstract
Giraud is the grandson of de Gaulle's wartime rival for leadership of the Free French, General Henri Giraud. De Gaulle's loyal ally, Michel Debré, Prime Minister and defender of French Algeria, was on several occasions misled as to the President's intentions regarding Algeria. Giraud's work, with the help of newly examined Russian archival material, allows him to assert that de Gaulle had, in fact, decided that Algerian independence was inevitable, from at least 1956 onwards, when he admitted as much to the Soviet ambassador to France, Sergei Vinogradov.
