Gay for pay: homocapitalism and LGBTQ employees in the transnational corporate landscape.

Abstract

This article examines corporate support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) rights through the lens of Rahul Rao's concept of "homocapitalism," which frames LGBTQ inclusion as a driver of economic growth within neoliberal capitalism. Drawing on interviews with LGBTQ employees at multinational technology companies, the article highlights how affinity groups serve both to represent queer employees and to advance corporate profit motives, often limiting activism to align with business interests. While affinity groups have facilitated workplace improvements, their broader impact on local LGBTQ communities is constrained, with corporate support primarily targeting a narrow, elite segment of the queer population to enhance recruitment and brand image. The article also discusses how multinational corporations selectively deploy LGBTQ inclusion rhetoric globally, balancing local cultural contexts with economic objectives.
