Abstract

The article focuses on how Cyrus the Great established the Persian Empire through a combination of military conquests and effective governance. Born around 600 or 575 BCE, Cyrus rose to power by defeating the Median king Astyages and subsequently conquering Lydia and Babylon, where he presented himself as a protector of local religions. His rule is documented in the Cyrus Cylinder, which portrays him as a benevolent leader restoring order and religious practices, although it is also seen as propaganda. Cyrus' legacy includes a vast empire and a governance model that balanced central authority with local autonomy, influencing future dynasties until the Arab conquest in the seventh century.
