Abstract
This photo essay focuses on a participatory research project conducted with community activists and volunteers from All Together in Dignity (ATD) Ireland, exploring lived experiences and hidden geographies of poverty and social exclusion in Dublin through walking interviews combined with photography. Participants, all with current or past experiences of poverty, curated individual walks in meaningful locations, using these routes and images to reflect on personal histories, social conditions, and policy failures. The research highlights how walking as a method reveals socio-spatial dimensions of poverty often invisible on conventional maps, emphasizing embodied memory, place-based narratives, and the political context of inequality. Co-produced with ATD Ireland, the study underscores the value of arts-based, participatory approaches in sociological research to foster inclusion, agency, and deeper understanding of poverty beyond resource redistribution.
