Abstract
The article focuses on the complex dynamics of surveillance and fencing within the Desertlands Community Neighborhood Association (DCNA), a 160-acre area divided into 14 parcels near the U.S.-Mexico border. It explores residents' varied perspectives on security measures such as cameras, drones, fences, and gated entrances, which have increased following thefts and safety concerns, while also raising issues of privacy, community connection, and exclusion. The piece highlights tensions between desires for safety and fears of surveillance, the challenges of defining community boundaries, and the balance between protecting property and fostering trust among neighbors. It also situates these local experiences within broader contexts of border militarization and the societal implications of surveillance technologies.
