Abstract
The article explores the ambivalent Confederate nationalism of William Tapley Mays, a yeoman soldier who served in both the Confederate and Union armies during the American Civil War. Topics include Mays' shifting loyalties, his critique of slavery and Confederate leadership and the implications of his experiences for understanding non-slaveholding Southerners' attitudes toward the Confederacy. It also draws on Mays' memoir to reveal his perspective as a soldier about Confederate cause.
