SOMALIA: Second Phase Offensive.

Abstract

Somalia's army backed by US Africom troops killed at least five al-Shabaab fighters and destroyed a large militant base on August 15th near the central town of Gal'ad, I Somali National TV i reported that day. Al-Shabaab gunmen attacked a military base in Mogadishu's Yaaqshid district in the early hours of August 6th, leading to a heavy firefight with government troops, privately-owned station I Radio Simba i reported I (6/8) i . B The government launches special operations against al-Shabaab in central parts of the country. b Somali Security Minister B Mohamed Ahmed Ali b ( B Dodishe b ) on August 7th said that the government had trained and equipped 15,000 new soldiers in preparation for a major offensive against the al-Shabaab militant group.
