Abstract

Research into nonviolent resistance shows that high participation is one of the main predictors of success. Yet while the 2020 resistance movement in Belarus was able to emerge and mobilize a significant share of the population, Lukashenka is still in power. Through an analysis of literature and 22 interviews with experts on and participants of the 2020 movement, I argue that while new social connections allowed for the emergence of the movement, its inability to formulate a long-term strategy and envision a future without Lukashenka hindered its chances of success.
