Abstract
The article reviews *Roots in Reverse: Senegalese Afro-Cuban Music and Tropical Cosmopolitanism*, which examines the significant influence of Afro-Cuban music on Senegalese national culture, identity, and modernity within the black Atlantic context. The book traces Afro-Cuban music's historical trajectory from late nineteenth-century Cuba to mid-twentieth-century Paris and Dakar, highlighting its role in shaping Senegalese cultural citizenship across class, ethnic, and gender lines. It also explores the evolution of Senegalese Afro-Cuban music through local adaptations, the rise of salsa mbalax, and its global circulation in the late twentieth century. The work contributes to African and Diaspora studies by foregrounding Afro-Cuban music's impact alongside more commonly studied genres like jazz, while engaging with concepts of cosmopolitanism and authenticity in Senegalese music history.
