FDR's Court-packing and the Struggle for Civil Rights.

Abstract

The article illuminates the strategic divergence within the African American community and civil rights organizations over how to respond to the Court-packing plan of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It examines debates in African American press and records of the National Negro Congress (NNC) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on the role of class and economics in civil rights. Focus is given on testimony of African American John P. Davis.
