Abstract

This article focuses on the evolution of economic and sociological perspectives on philanthropy, emphasizing the contributions of sociologist Arthur J. Vidich toward developing a systemic, political economy framework for understanding philanthropy within capitalist societies. Vidich's analysis, grounded in Marxist principles, highlights philanthropy as a mechanism intertwined with capital accumulation, social class dynamics, and organisational control, particularly through private and corporate foundations, while also addressing the roles of interest groups, shared social experiences, and volunteering. The article critiques Vidich's limited economic focus, noting his omission of key contemporary factors such as the financialisation of philanthropy and the impact of technological change on philanthropic practices and social time use. It calls for a renewed, comprehensive analytical framework that integrates these economic dimensions with Vidich's sociological insights to better understand philanthropy's role in maintaining or challenging social inequalities and its place within the broader economic system.
