Abstract

The article focuses on a tenured professor and dean of engineering who transitioned from academia to elected office by running for a town council position in New York state. Motivated by a desire to engage more directly with community service and policy impact, the professor closed their research lab to dedicate time to campaigning and public service. Their scientific skills, such as grant writing and collaboration despite differing viewpoints, proved valuable in their role as a council member. While missing aspects of academic research, the individual finds serving in local government rewarding and encourages other scientists to consider applying their expertise beyond traditional academic roles.
