Abstract
The article examines a significant cultural and social shift in contemporary China, where the long-held belief in meritocracy and hard work as pathways to success is increasingly questioned. A 2023 survey found that connections and family wealth now outweigh personal ability in achieving wealth, leading many young Chinese to reject traditional markers of success and pursue alternative lifestyles, including relocating to smaller cities and embracing blue-collar or rural work. This shift is accompanied by a decline in conspicuous consumption and a growing empathy toward laborers and the economically disadvantaged. Despite economic challenges and a sense of entrapment, the article suggests that Chinese society is becoming more tolerant and collectively minded, with individuals increasingly prioritizing personal fulfillment over societal expectations.
