Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Eastern Finland examined the factors influencing Excessive Internet Use (EIU) among adolescents, focusing on mental health, intellectual difficulties, and sociodemographic factors. The findings revealed a social gradient in EIU, with disadvantaged groups showing a higher tendency towards EIU compared to advantaged groups. The study highlighted the mediating roles of anxiety and intellectual difficulties in the relationship between depressive symptoms and EIU, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions for at-risk groups such as girls, sexual minorities, and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
