Abstract
This article reviews *Freedom Church of the Poor: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign*, which examines King’s late-1960s efforts to organize a multiracial coalition of poor Americans demanding guaranteed jobs or income as human rights. The book highlights King’s vision of a “freedom church of the poor,” a nonviolent, diverse movement aimed at radically restructuring American society to address systemic racism, materialism, and militarism. It details the formation and challenges of the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign, including the establishment of Resurrection City and the dilution of its demands after King’s assassination. The review also connects this history to the contemporary Poor People’s Campaign led by Rev. William Barber and Rev. Liz Theoharis, noting the changed economic and political context since King’s time.
