Abstract

In her book "Young Women against Apartheid: Gender, Youth and South Africa's Liberation Struggle," Emily Bridger addresses the lack of representation of young black women's voices in the struggle against apartheid. Through interviews with former members of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS), Bridger constructs a timeline of their experiences and explores the intersectionality of race, gender, age, and class. The book emphasizes the importance of oral narratives and challenges the tendency to view identities in isolation. While the focus on COSAS limits the representation of young women's experiences in other organizations and locations, it opens up opportunities for further research on the impact of activism on post-apartheid lives. Bridger's work reshapes our understanding of the apartheid era and contributes to various fields of study. [Extracted from the article]
