Abstract
In "Ecologies of Imperialism in Algeria," Brock Cutler explores the concept of an imperial ecosystem in the context of French Algeria. The book focuses on the ecological crisis of the 1860s, using the example of a lead poisoning epidemic in Algiers caused by contaminated wood from Paris. Cutler incorporates a range of stories and anecdotes to analyze the forces that shaped the imperial system, drawing from archival material in France, Algeria, and the United Kingdom. The book examines the social, political, and environmental ecosystems of nineteenth-century Algeria, as well as the border disputes with Tunisia and the impact of migration on urban centers. While the chapter organization is occasionally disjointed, the book provides a compelling analysis of the complex ecosystems that influenced life in colonial Algeria. [Extracted from the article]
