Abstract

"Virtue Capitalists: The Rise and Fall of the Professional Class in the Anglophone World, 1870–2008" is a well-researched book that explores the growth and decline of the professional middle class. The book argues that professionals invested virtue to create economic value for themselves and society. It examines three historical periods, including the expansion of professions in the Anglophone world, the consolidation of professionals as a class after World War II, and the challenges faced by the professions due to decolonization, gender politics, and the emergence of neoliberalism and managerialism. While the book provides interesting insights, the author suggests that more attention should be given to the role of the state in the development of the professions. [Extracted from the article]
