Abstract

"Displacing Territory: Syrian and Palestinian Refugees in Jordan" is a journal article that examines the concept of territory in the context of forced displacement in non-Western countries, focusing on the experiences of Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Jordan. The author, Karen Culcasi, adopts a feminist approach and conducts multiple ethnographic visits to Jordan to understand displacement as an embodied experience. The article challenges the state-based narratives of territory and belonging, highlighting non-Western approaches to refugee reception and territory. It also explores how refugees conceptualize territory outside of the state-territory nexus, emphasizing the hybridity and institutionalization of territory. The article concludes by questioning the effectiveness of the Westernized refugee resettlement program in providing a durable solution to forced displacement. [Extracted from the article]
