Abstract

The article focuses on a historical episode from the 1960s when the resignation of British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan prompted an unusual scenario where hereditary peers, who were previously not allowed in the House of Commons, had a chance to become prime minister. It mentions two candidates, Quintin Hogg and Alec Douglas-Home, managed to enter the House of Commons after disclaiming their peerages, with Douglas-Home eventually becoming prime minister.
