From homophily to exclusion in small social systems.

Abstract

The article presents a mathematical model describing the dynamics of social status and interpersonal contact intensities among actors represented as nodes in a weighted social network. The model incorporates two sociological principles: homophily (the tendency of similar individuals to associate) and the Matthew effect (where higher status accelerates further status gains). Results show that over time, one actor with initially minimal status becomes socially excluded, while all other actors converge to equal, high-status positions, reflecting collective social exclusion. The findings are linked to real-world phenomena such as racial promotion biases in the London Metropolitan Police and scapegoating, illustrating how social norms enforce group homogeneity and exclusion of dissenters.
