Abstract
The article focuses on the complexities and contradictions of green finance within the broader framework of financial capitalism and sustainability transitions. It highlights how governments, financial institutions, and corporations increasingly rely on private capital to drive net-zero economies, raising critical questions about whether green finance can truly depart from profit-driven financial logics or merely adapts them. The discussion centers on three key themes: the role of states and public investment in counterbalancing financial capitalism; addressing global inequalities and neo-colonial dynamics in green transitions, especially in the Global South; and the implications of asset-based accumulation and the commodification of nature for democratic accountability and social equity. The article calls for interdisciplinary research that critically examines these tensions and explores alternative models for sustainable and just economic transformations.
