Abstract

The article focuses on the restoration and archaeological investigation of SGang Gwaay Llnagaay, a historic Haida village in the Haida Gwaii archipelago severely impacted by a 2018 storm. The site, part of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site, features centuries-old cedar mortuary poles, longhouses, and cultural artifacts that reveal insights into Haida life from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Archaeological excavations uncovered household items, trade goods, and a bone st'iiga, a lip disk worn by high-status Haida women, highlighting the village’s cultural significance. Visitors to SGang Gwaay can explore the village’s ceremonial poles, ancestral walkways, and native plants, with access via Sandspit airport and guided tours available. [Extracted from the article]
