Abstract

The article reviews *Greece from Junta to Crisis: Modernization, Transition and Diversity*, a cultural history by Dimitris Tziovas that centers on Greece's metapolitefsi period (post-1974) through the lens of cultural transformation rather than political structures. Tziovas explores how the fall of the dictatorship enabled diverse social identities and cultural expressions to emerge amid ongoing tensions between modernization, Europeanization, and traditional dualisms such as West-East and modernity-traditionalism. The book addresses shifts in literature, language, media, migration, youth culture, and film, highlighting the complex interplay of resistance, identity politics, and popular culture during Greece's transition and austerity crises. It concludes by examining contemporary cultural responses to neoliberalism and crisis, emphasizing the contested nature of Greek identity and the challenges of interpreting cultural resistance from both insider and outsider perspectives.
