Abstract
A recent study published in Science Advances confirms that modern Blackfoot people are closely related to their ancestors who lived on the land hundreds of years ago. The study also suggests that Blackfoot people descend from a previously unknown genetic lineage that dates back roughly 18,000 years, which could strengthen their claims to their land and water rights. The Blackfoot Confederacy, which spans the U.S.-Canada border, has long fought to protect their ancestral lands from threats by governments and energy sector interests. The study, conducted in collaboration with Indigenous co-authors, provides new evidence for the Blackfoot people's enduring presence in the region. [Extracted from the article]
