Abstract
TikTok is facing a potential divestment or ban in the United States as Congress moves forward with a bill aimed at forcing its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell its ownership stake. The bill has already passed in the House and is expected to be quickly taken up by the Senate. Proponents of the bill argue that TikTok is used as a propaganda tool by the Chinese government and could compromise US users' data. However, TikTok has denied these allegations and warned that the bill would result in a ban of the app in the US. The bill, if enacted, would give ByteDance nearly a year to divest itself of TikTok, with a longer deadline proposed by Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell. The bill has support from those concerned about data privacy and national security, but opponents argue that it infringes on free speech rights and could harm entrepreneurs and influencers who rely on the app. The bill is expected to face legal challenges if it becomes law.
