Abstract

The article examines the representation of the construction of a central seat of power in the television series *Versailles* (2015–2018) within the context of the crisis of deterritorialization following international terrorism, particularly the 2015 Paris attacks. It analyzes how the series draws on historical fictions of the 17th and 18th-century French court to depict the struggle of the state against internal and external adversaries, highlighting an ambivalence toward the strategic establishment of absolute power from a position of political fragility. The evolving portrayal of Protestant characters—from antagonistic traitors in the first season to sympathetic victims of excessive state control by the third season—is linked to shifting contemporary attitudes toward terrorism and critiques of Islamophobia and intolerance in France. The series thus serves as a cultural reflection on the challenges of state sovereignty, national identity, and political authority amid modern threats, using historical allegory to engage with present-day social and political anxieties.
