Abstract
The article focuses on the life and political career of Lionel Jospin, the former Socialist prime minister of France, who died at age 88. Jospin is noted for introducing France's 35-hour work week in 2000, aimed at reducing unemployment by redistributing work hours, and for overseeing a period of strong economic growth and a significant drop in unemployment during his tenure from 1997 to 2002. Despite these achievements, he finished third in the 2002 presidential election, which allowed far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen to advance to the runoff, marking a turning point in French politics. Jospin retired from politics after this defeat and later served on France’s constitutional council. [Extracted from the article]
