Abstract

"Statesmen, Strategists, and Diplomats: Canada's Prime Ministers and the Making of Foreign Policy" is a collection of essays that examines the international dimensions of Canada's prime ministers from John A. Macdonald to Justin Trudeau. The book analyzes each prime minister's impacts on government structures, policies, and personal styles, and concludes with a ranking of their foreign-policy performance and overall legacy. The essays highlight episodes that general biographies might overlook, revealing a clear pattern that foreign policies are tied to domestic considerations and successful prime ministers work closely with ministers responsible for foreign affairs or international trade. The book also suggests that deeper study is needed on Canada's military preparedness and the records and views of Canadian prime ministers in this area. [Extracted from the article]
