Abstract

This article focuses on an exploratory study of prisoners' experiences in Segregation and Reintegration Units (SRUs) within the Scottish Prison Service (SPS). Using a mixed-methods design, the study surveyed 151 long-term male prisoners across eight Scottish prisons and conducted in-depth interviews with seven participants to examine the emotional, mental health, and reintegration impacts of segregation. Findings revealed that while many prisoners experienced negative effects such as isolation, boredom, and anxiety, some viewed segregation as a safe refuge from mainstream prison life. The study highlights inconsistencies in access to services and support across SRUs and underscores the challenges prisoners face when reintegrating into the general population, recommending increased purposeful activities, mental health support, and clearer transition planning to improve outcomes.
