Abstract

This article explores the strategic role of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq in ISIS operations. It highlights the historical and geographic significance of provinces like Kirkuk, Salahuddin, Diyala, and Nineveh, which have been hotspots for insurgent activities. The diverse ethnic composition of these provinces has also attracted ISIS, as it seeks to exploit potential divisions. The article discusses the evolving role of the Kurdistan Region in ISIS operations, including its function as a transit route and its involvement in acts of terrorism. It also examines the tactical and strategic adjustments made by ISIS following the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The article mentions the support for ISIS operations in Baghdad from the Kurdistan region of Iraq. It notes the increased number of arrests of ISIS operatives in Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, and Kirkuk over the past three years, partly due to improved coordination between the Kurdistan Regional Government and Baghdad. The article emphasizes the importance of enhanced intelligence cooperation, strengthened joint military operations, addressing socio-political grievances, implementing cross-border security measures, seeking international support and collaboration, launching counter-propaganda initiatives, and implementing comprehensive de-radicalization programs to combat the resurgent ISIS threat in the region. The situation remains volatile and requires constant vigilance, and a comprehensive approach is necessary to address the underlying causes of extremism and instability. [Extracted from the article]
