Abstract
The article discusses the potential impacts of U.S. tariffs on prescription drugs, highlighting the differing effects on branded and generic pharmaceuticals. While tariffs on branded drugs may incentivize some manufacturers to relocate production to the U.S., the anticipated job gains could be limited and delayed. In contrast, tariffs on generic drugs could exacerbate shortages and drive manufacturers out of the U.S. market due to low profit margins, ultimately harming patient health and increasing insurance premiums. The authors suggest that a more effective approach to boosting domestic generic production would require targeted economic interventions rather than relying solely on tariffs.
