Abstract

The article focuses on the likelihood that global greenhouse gas emissions will not peak in 2025 as targeted under the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels. Despite commitments from nearly 300 nations through nationally determined contributions (NDCs), emissions increased by 1.3% in 2024, and global temperatures have already temporarily surpassed the 1.5°C threshold. Research indicates only a 22% chance emissions will peak by 2025, with a 90% chance by 2045, and current updated NDCs could limit warming to about 2.1°C. The article also highlights legal obligations from a recent International Court of Justice advisory opinion and the growing role of renewable energy, which has surpassed coal as the primary global electricity source in early 2025.
