Abstract

A delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by the presidents of Senegal and Ghana, visited Sierra Leone to discuss a "security mission" following an alleged coup attempt in November. Armed attackers stormed several military and police facilities, resulting in 21 deaths and the escape of hundreds of prisoners. Since then, 80 people have been arrested, including former president Ernest Bai Koroma, who is now considered a suspect. The Sierra Leone government has lifted the curfew imposed after the events, and the security forces have recovered some of the stolen weapons. President Julius Maada Bio has emphasized that the intervention is not a military one and does not infringe on Sierra Leone's sovereignty. [Extracted from the article]
