Abstract

The article focuses on the Decembrist revolt of 1825, a failed attempt by a group of Russian army officers and nobles to overthrow Tsar Nicholas I and establish liberal reforms including a constitution, abolition of serfdom, and civil rights. Originating from secret societies such as the Northern and Southern Societies, the Decembrists were influenced by Western liberal and republican ideas and sought to transform autocratic Russia into a modern state. The uprising was quickly suppressed by government forces, leading to executions, imprisonment, and exile of the participants to Siberia, where many were later joined by their wives. The revolt marked the first organized liberal opposition to Russian autocracy and shaped Nicholas I's repressive policies, delaying political reform for decades.
